Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The sickening truth hit my chest with the force of a speeding freight train.
My sister had been sleeping with my abusive husband while we were still legally married.
She had actively helped him hide his assets during our brutal divorce proceedings.
Now, she was partnering with him to completely steal my final remaining property.
"Get off this porch before I break your other wrist," I ordered her with terrifying calmness.
Karla scrambled to her feet and ran to her silver car like a frightened coward.
I unlocked the boarding house door and rushed inside to check on Sophia.
Mrs. Gable, the kind landlady, was sitting in the parlor playing blocks with my daughter.
She looked up at me with a deeply concerned expression on her wrinkled face.
"Laura, a very stern woman from the state child welfare agency is waiting for you in your room," she warned.
My heart plummeted into my stomach as I rushed down the hallway and pushed my door open.
A woman in a sharp business suit was inspecting the modest living conditions of my rented room.
"Are you Laura?" the social worker asked, clutching a thick yellow clipboard.
I nodded nervously and asked her why she was investigating my family.
"We received an anonymous tip claiming you were living in a squalid drug den with a starving toddler," she stated.
I realized immediately that my mother had called Child Protective Services as an act of pure revenge.
I showed the social worker the clean room, a fridge full of healthy food, and my daughter's pristine medical records.
The social worker smiled warmly and noted that the malicious report was clearly entirely fabricated.
"I will close this investigation today, but you need to be extremely careful," the social worker advised.
I thanked her profusely for her understanding and fairness.
"However, I must inform you about the secondary legal action filed this morning," she added seriously.

I asked her what other legal action she could possibly be talking about.
"Your ex-husband Greg just filed an emergency petition for full permanent custody of Sophia."
