Chapter 5 - The Stolen Identity

My hands trembled violently as I gripped the phone against my ear.
My parents had committed felony identity theft against their own two-year-old granddaughter.
They had essentially ruined Sophia's financial future just to keep the lights on in a stolen apartment.
"I am going straight to the federal authorities," I told Sterling with absolute rage.
"Do it right now, because child identity theft carries mandatory prison time," Sterling encouraged.
I ended the call and drove directly to the regional office of the federal investigators.
I filed a comprehensive report detailing the forged loan documents and the utility fraud.
The federal agent promised to launch an immediate criminal probe into my family.
I returned to the boarding house feeling a small sense of victorious justice.
As I walked up the driveway, I saw a sleek silver car parked illegally on the grass.
Karla was pacing back and forth on the porch, furiously screaming into her cell phone.
She ended her call and charged toward me like a wild, rabid animal.
"The bank just officially initiated foreclosure proceedings on my condo!" she shrieked at the top of her lungs.
"That is what happens when you do not pay your mortgage for months," I replied calmly.
"You were supposed to pay it for me, you selfish parasite!" Karla screamed, raising her hand to strike me.
I caught her wrist in mid-air and twisted it painfully until she dropped to her knees.
"You forged my signature on a federal loan application, Karla," I whispered coldly.
Karla panicked and began to cry real tears of absolute desperation.
"I only did it because Greg promised to share the two hundred thousand dollars with me," she sobbed.
I let go of her wrist and took a sudden step backward in pure shock.
"Why would Greg ever share a massive loan payout with you?" I demanded.

Karla looked up at me with smeared makeup and a deeply guilty expression.
"Because Greg and I have been secretly dating for an entire year," she confessed.
