Chapter 3 - The Unwanted Guest

I walked out of the law office with my daughter clinging tightly to my shoulder.

My mind raced with terrifying questions about why my ex-husband was suddenly helping my sister.

I drove straight to the local police precinct to request an escort to my apartment.

I needed to secure my remaining belongings and formally serve my parents with an eviction notice.

Two uniformed officers agreed to follow me to the address to keep the peace.

We walked up the familiar concrete stairs and I used my key to unlock the front door.

My mother was sitting on the living room sofa drinking tea as if nothing had changed.

She scoffed loudly when she saw the police officers standing behind me.

"Are you really trying to arrest your own mother over a bowl of soup?" she mocked.

"I am here to collect my things and serve you with a thirty-day notice to vacate my property," I stated.

My father walked out of the kitchen and laughed right in my face.

"You do not own anything in this world, Laura," my father spat with pure contempt.

He confidently gestured toward the master bedroom at the end of the hallway.

The bedroom door swung open and a tall man stepped out into the living room.

It was Greg, looking completely relaxed in a pair of sweatpants and a fitted t-shirt.

He smiled a wicked, arrogant smile that made my blood run completely cold.

"What is he doing in my house?" I demanded, pointing a shaking finger at my ex-husband.

"Greg is the new legal tenant," my mother announced proudly.

She handed the police officers a thick residential lease agreement signed by my father.

The officers reviewed the document and told me this was now a complicated civil matter.

They informed me that they could not forcibly remove a tenant with a signed lease.

Greg took a step closer to me and lowered his voice so the officers could not hear.

"You really thought you could hide the equity of this apartment from me during our divorce?" Greg whispered.
