Chapter 9 - The Desperate Search

I screamed in absolute terror as I dropped my phone onto the floorboards of the car.

Daniel slammed his foot violently onto the gas pedal, tearing out of the dark woods toward the elementary school.

I called the local police department and begged them to issue an immediate Amber Alert for my daughter.

The dispatcher coldly informed me that since Margaret had a judge's signature, it was a civil matter, not a crime.

Margaret had bought the corrupt judge to completely bypass the actual law.

I frantically tracked Lily's location using the emergency GPS chip hidden inside her digital watch.

The tiny red dot on my screen was moving incredibly fast toward the northern state border.

Margaret was taking her to the isolated Whitmore family cabin deep in the dangerous, snowy mountains.

If she crossed the state line, returning Lily to our legal custody would take agonizing months of federal court battles.

Daniel drove our car recklessly through the mountain roads, completely ignoring every single speed limit.

We finally reached the long, dirt driveway leading up to the massive wooden cabin.

Margaret's luxury SUV was parked heavily near the front steps, surrounded by the snowy landscape.

Daniel kicked the heavy wooden front door completely off its iron hinges.

We rushed into the cabin and found Margaret tightly gripping Lily by her small arm.

Lily was crying hysterically, terrified of the cruel woman who had locked her outside in the cold.

I demanded that Margaret let my daughter go immediately, revealing that I had the real DNA tests in my hand.

I proudly announced that I knew Mark was a bastard child and that her entire life was a pathetic lie.

Margaret simply laughed, a cold, wicked sound that echoed loudly against the wooden walls.

She smugly stated that nobody would ever believe a broke, accused embezzler over the beloved family matriarch.

Before I could say another word, the heavy wooden door to the master bedroom slowly creaked open.

An elderly man leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane stepped slowly into the living room.

It was Grandpa Arthur, and he had heard every single word she just said.
