Chapter 4 - The Husband's Confession

I drove back to my house in a total daze of confusion and massive betrayal.
I burst through the front door and threw the clinic's printed confirmation directly at Daniel's chest.
He looked at the paper, and all the color instantly drained from his handsome face.
I demanded to know why he had secretly tested our beautiful daughter when she was just a newborn.
Daniel began to cry, the tears streaming down his face as he desperately reached for my hands.
He explained that Margaret had relentlessly manipulated him during the highly stressful first weeks of Lily's life.
She constantly whispered toxic doubts in his ear while he was sleep-deprived and totally vulnerable.
He admitted he took a cheek swab from Lily in a moment of pure weakness just to shut his mother up forever.
The actual test results came back as a perfect match, proving he was absolutely the father.
Daniel hid the real results in his childhood bedroom at his mother's house out of massive shame.
Margaret must have eventually found the real document and used the clinic's letterhead to forge the fake negative one.
I felt a huge wave of anger toward Daniel for hiding this secret, but I knew Margaret was the real enemy.
She had brilliantly weaponized his momentary weakness to destroy our entire family years later.
I told Daniel I would eventually forgive him, but right now, we had to focus on going on the offensive.
We needed to break into Margaret's estate and find the original, unaltered DNA document to clear my name.
Just as we started formulating a plan to sneak onto her property, a heavy knock echoed from the front door.
I looked through the peephole and felt my blood turn to absolute ice.
Two serious-looking government workers were standing on our porch holding clipboards.
They were accompanied by a fully uniformed police officer.

I opened the door slowly, my hands shaking violently against the cold brass knob.
The lead worker introduced herself as an agent from the Department of Child Protective Services.
