Chapter 8 - The Custody Battle

While the criminal cases slowly ground through the federal system, the family court moved with vicious speed. Julian, despite his pending felony charges, attempted to file for joint custody of the unborn baby. His lawyer argued that he was a non-violent offender and had a right to be in the child's life.
We walked into the family courthouse armed for war.
Julian sat at the petitioner's table, trying to look like a reformed, heartbroken father. But when it was our turn to present, Sarah’s lawyer didn't just bring up the financial fraud. She brought up the psychological abuse.
We played the video Julian had recorded at the baby shower—the one where his mother humiliated Sarah, and he laughed. We presented the digital stalking logs. We proved that his interest in the child was purely financial; a last-ditch effort to maintain a legal tie to Sarah’s trust fund.
The judge, a no-nonsense woman with zero tolerance for abusers, looked at Julian with pure disgust.

“Mr. Sterling, you have demonstrated a profound lack of moral character and a predatory intent toward your wife’s assets,” the judge ruled, her gavel poised. “I am granting sole legal and physical custody to the mother. You are granted zero visitation rights pending the outcome of your federal trial, and a permanent restraining order is hereby issued.”
Julian buried his face in his hands. He had lost everything.
