Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Campaign

By Tuesday, the social media war began. Victoria and Julian, realizing the legal noose was tightening, went on the offensive.

Julian posted a tearful, highly edited video on Facebook and Instagram. He looked disheveled, playing the perfect victim. “My wife is suffering from severe prenatal paranoia,” he told the camera, wiping away a fake tear. “Her mother, who has always hated my family, is feeding her delusions. I just want to see my unborn child. Please pray for my family.”

The comments poured in. High-society friends and strangers alike attacked me and Sarah, calling her crazy and me a manipulative monster.

Sarah sat on my couch, reading the comments, sobbing. “They’re turning everyone against me. His family is threatening to sue me for defamation.”

I gently took the iPad from her hands and turned it off. “Let them talk, Sarah. Let them post all the videos they want. In fraud investigations, arrogant criminals always hang themselves with their own PR.”

My phone rang. It was Marshal Hayes.

“Clara,” Hayes said, his voice crackling with static. “We ran the digital signature from the fake loan documents. The IP address didn't bounce from a proxy. They were sloppy.”

“Let me guess,” I smiled coldly. “It traces back to Victoria’s home network?”

“Better,” Hayes chuckled. “It traces back to Julian’s startup office. And we just got the subpoena for his hard drives. We're going in.”
