Chapter 2 - The Escape

The drive to my house was suffocatingly quiet. Sarah stared out the passenger window, her hands resting protectively over her swollen belly. The illusion of her perfect marriage had been surgically removed in less than five minutes.

“He said the trust was underperforming,” Sarah finally whispered, her voice cracking. “He said his mother had a wealth manager who could double the yield for the baby's college fund. I only gave him view-only access to the statements.”

“I know, honey,” I said, keeping my eyes on the road. “But view-only access gives them account numbers. And Victoria has enough connections in unregulated lending firms to push through a shadow loan. They were using your trust as collateral to buy that estate, putting the title in Victoria’s LLC.”

Sarah began to hyperventilate. “If I default… if I didn't pay a loan I didn't know I had…”

“They would seize the trust,” I finished grimly. “Victoria would get a two-and-a-half-million-dollar house, and you would be left bankrupt. And Julian would have let it happen.”

When we arrived at my home, I bypassed the living room and took her straight to my home office. I booted up my encrypted workstation. I wasn't just a mother today; I was a twenty-five-year veteran of financial forensics.

“I need you to log into your primary email, Sarah,” I said, my voice gentle but firm. “They didn't just forge a paper signature. They had to bypass the bank’s two-factor authentication. I need to know how deep the rot goes.”

Within ten minutes of scanning her login history, we found it. A hidden forwarding rule buried in her settings. Every email from her bank had been silently diverted to an encrypted proton-mail address. Julian hadn't just betrayed her; he had digitally stalked her to do it.
