Chapter 10 - The Naming

The air in the hospital room was warm and smelled of baby powder and fresh flowers. The chaos of the past year felt like a distant nightmare, locked away behind steel bars and court transcripts.

Sarah lay in the hospital bed, exhausted but glowing with a genuine, unfiltered happiness. In her arms was a perfect, sleeping baby girl.

I stood by the window, watching the city lights begin to twinkle in the twilight.

A nurse walked in with a clipboard, smiling warmly. “Okay, Mom, time for the official paperwork. Have we decided on a name for the birth certificate?”

Sarah looked down at her daughter. There was no hesitation, no fear, no shadow of the Sterling family hanging over her. She looked up at me, a fierce, resilient smile on her face.

“Her first name is Clara,” Sarah said softly, honoring me. “And her last name… is Vale. My maiden name. Our family name.”

The nurse jotted it down and left the room. I walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, gently brushing my granddaughter’s cheek. The mother contributes nothing but trouble, Victoria had said. But as I looked at the two strongest women I knew, I realized the truth. A mother contributes the strength to burn the monsters to the ground.
