Chapter 1 - The Federal Crash

The heavy oak gates of the Sterling estate didn’t just open; they were pushed wide by two black SUVs. Victoria’s smug expression dissolved into a mask of aristocratic confusion as four men and women in windbreakers—bearing the gold letters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division—marched onto the terrace.
The string quartet stopped playing mid-note. The fifty-plus guests froze, champagne flutes hovering near their lips.
“Excuse me, this is a private event!” Victoria barked, her voice shrill, instantly dropping her faux-elegance. “Security, remove these people!”
Marshal Hayes, a man I had worked with on a dozen wire-fraud cases, stepped past the buffet table. He didn't look at Victoria. He looked directly at me. I gave him a curt nod and pointed to the leather-bound escrow dossiers on the easel.
“Victoria Sterling and Julian Sterling?” Hayes asked, his voice booming over the silent courtyard.
Julian’s face went chalk-white. He instinctively lowered his phone, but Hayes’s partner was already there. “We’ll be taking that device, sir. It’s now evidence in an active federal fraud investigation.”
“Evidence?” Julian stammered, pulling back. “It’s my wife’s baby shower!”
“And you just broadcasted a confession of financial coercion to the cloud,” Hayes said dryly, snapping the phone out of Julian's hand. He turned to the display. “We are executing a search warrant for all financial documents pertaining to the Sarah Vale Trust. Ma’am, step away from the easel.”
Victoria’s composure shattered. “Clara, what have you done? You vindictive, jealous woman!” she hissed at me, her eyes wild.
I didn't look at her. I walked straight to my daughter. Sarah was shaking, tears welling in her eyes as the reality of her husband’s betrayal crashed over her. I wrapped my arm tightly around her shoulders. “Get your purse, sweetheart. We’re leaving.”
May you like
“Julian?” Sarah whispered, looking at her husband for any sign of a defense.
Julian didn't look at her. He was too busy watching the agents bag the forged mortgage documents that were supposed to steal her future.
