Chapter 6 - The Mother Tosses the Son

My prediction came true faster than I expected. Two days later, Victoria Sterling’s high-priced defense attorney released a public statement.

“Mrs. Victoria Sterling is devastated to learn of the financial irregularities regarding her daughter-in-law’s trust. Mrs. Sterling had no knowledge of her son Julian’s desperate actions to fund his failing business. She intends to cooperate fully with authorities.”

Julian called me within ten minutes of the statement hitting the news. He was hyperventilating. “She cut me off! She froze the joint accounts. She threw me to the wolves!”

“I told you she would,” I replied calmly, the recorder on my desk capturing every word.

“I have emails, Clara! I have texts from her telling me exactly how to stamp the digital signature. I have proof she orchestrated the whole thing!” he screamed into the phone.

“Then I suggest you take them to Marshal Hayes, Julian. Before she books a one-way flight to a non-extradition country.”

The Sterling family loyalty had lasted exactly as long as their money.
