Chapter 7 - The Arrests

At 6:00 AM on a rainy Thursday, the final hammer fell. I watched the local news feed from my kitchen island, Sarah sitting beside me with a cup of herbal tea.

The news helicopter hovered over the Sterling estate. Down below, tactical teams were breaching the front gates. Victoria was led out the front door in handcuffs, wearing a silk robe, screaming obscenities at the agents and demanding her lawyer. Her mascara was running down her face, stripping away the last illusion of her high-society grace.

Across town, Julian didn't even fight. He walked out of his luxury apartment with his head down, handcuffed, carrying a manila envelope full of the evidence he had turned over to the feds to secure a plea deal against his own mother.

Sarah watched the screen, her hand resting on her stomach. “I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with him,” she whispered.

“You’re going to spend the rest of your life with someone much better,” I said, kissing her forehead. “Yourself. And this baby.”
