Chapter 9 - The Breach

Time seemed to freeze completely inside the pediatric ward.
An air embolism shot directly into my daughter’s bloodstream would kill her almost instantly.
"Wait!" I screamed, pressing my face hard against the cold glass.
Vance raised a single hand, completely halting his men in their tracks.
"Let me talk to him," I pleaded to the mob boss.
Vance stepped aside, allowing me to speak directly into the intercom button.
"Daniel, listen to me very carefully," I said, forcing my voice to remain calm and steady.
"Vance already has his money, so he does not care about you anymore."
Daniel kept the deadly syringe hovering dangerously close to Lily's IV tube.
"I want the rest of the trust fund, Rachel, or I have absolutely nothing left to live for," he demanded, sweating profusely.
"I am digitally signing the transfer papers for the entire four hundred million right now," I lied smoothly.
I held up my phone, pretending to authorize a massive wire transfer on the banking application.
Daniel’s greedy eyes darted toward the screen, his desperation making him incredibly foolish.
"Slide the phone under the door gap so I can verify the confirmation screen," he ordered.
This was exactly the mistake I needed him to make.
He took exactly two steps away from Lily's bed to approach the heavy wooden door.
Vance gave a silent, immediate hand signal to his most massive enforcer.
The enforcer swung a heavy steel battering ram directly into the electronic locking mechanism.
The reinforced door exploded entirely off its hinges, crashing violently onto the hospital floor.

Daniel stumbled backward in pure shock, dropping the deadly air syringe.
Before Vance's men could grab him, Daniel snatched a scalpel from the medical tray and lunged violently toward my sleeping daughter.
