Chapter 6 - The Hospital Standoff
Arthur commanded his driver to speed recklessly through the morning traffic.
We arrived at the hospital in record time, tires screeching near the emergency entrance.
I sprinted through the sliding glass doors, completely ignoring the confused receptionists.
When I reached the pediatric intensive care unit, I found a terrifying scene.
Daniel was standing in the hallway, holding a stack of legal documents in the air.
Two hospital security guards were trying to block the door to Lily's room, but they looked hesitant.
"I have an emergency family court order granting me temporary sole custody!" Daniel shouted at the medical staff.
A local police officer was standing beside him, reading the forged document.
"Ma'am, you need to step back," the officer ordered as I approached.
"He forged those papers, and he is trying to kidnap my daughter!" I screamed.
Arthur stepped smoothly in front of me, handing his own verified legal documents directly to the officer.
"This woman is the legal guardian of the sole heir to the Sterling Estate," Arthur stated with absolute authority.
"Her husband is currently under active federal investigation for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit murder."
Daniel's arrogant smirk vanished instantly.
He realized the police were no longer on his side.
In a desperate panic, Daniel aggressively shoved the security guards aside and burst into Lily's hospital room.
I screamed and ran after him, but the door slammed shut.
The heavy lock clicked from the inside.
Through the observation window, I saw Daniel standing directly over my sleeping daughter's bed.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a heavy black handgun, aiming it directly at the intensive care machines.
"Nobody comes in here, or I unplug everything!" he roared through the glass.
