Chapter 3 - The Planted Evidence

Daniel shoved me forcefully against the side of his car.
His eyes were wild, and his breath smelled strongly of stale alcohol and mints.
"You should never snoop through my things, Rachel," he hissed viciously.
I tried to push him away, but his grip on my arms was entirely too strong.
"You had your mother feed those magnets to Lily for money!" I screamed at him.
He offered me a cruel, chilling smile.
"I owed dangerous people three million dollars, and children's life insurance policies pay out beautifully in tragic accidents," he whispered.
He reached into my coat pocket and snatched the prepaid phone away from me.
"But you are not going to ruin this for me, my sweet wife."
He suddenly let go of me and sprinted back toward the hospital entrance.
I chased after him, screaming for hospital security to stop him.
By the time I burst through the double doors, Daniel was already talking to Officer Carter.
"She planted the evidence in my car, Officer!" Daniel yelled, pointing a shaking finger at me.
He handed the officer a completely different piece of paper.
It was a hardware store receipt for the high-powered magnets, and it was signed with my forged signature.
"She took out the insurance policy on our daughter last month, and I just found the paperwork in her purse," Daniel lied effortlessly.
Officer Carter looked at me with deep disgust.
He pulled out his handcuffs and began walking toward me.
"Rachel, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of your daughter."
I screamed and fought, but they pinned my arms behind my back.
As they dragged me away, the detective read me my rights.

But the final thing he said made my blood completely freeze.
"You are the sole beneficiary of a five-million-dollar policy, Rachel, and the signature on the document matches yours perfectly."
