Chapter 5 - The Secret Trust

The police released me less than thirty minutes later.
Arthur Sterling's USB drive completely exonerated me, proving Daniel had remotely deleted the main cloud.
More importantly, it contained audio of Patricia confirming Daniel's exact plan.
As we walked out of the police station, the morning sun was just beginning to rise over the desert.
"Who are you, really?" I asked the mysterious lawyer while getting into his black luxury town car.
"I was your biological father's primary legal counsel," Arthur explained while pouring me a bottle of water.
I frowned deeply, leaning back against the leather seats.
"My father died when I was a teenager, and he left us absolutely nothing," I argued.
Arthur shook his head slowly.
"That is what your mother was paid to tell you," he corrected me gently.
"Your father was a billionaire real estate developer, and he established an irrevocable trust fund."
My heart hammered aggressively against my ribs as I listened.
"Upon turning five years old, Lily legally inherited four hundred million dollars," Arthur revealed.
Daniel and Patricia did not just want a pathetic five-million-dollar insurance payout.
They needed Lily to suffer a severe medical emergency.
They wanted to have me locked away in prison for child abuse.
With me gone, Daniel would gain full medical and financial power of attorney over his injured daughter.
He would have absolute, unchecked control over four hundred million dollars.
Before I could even process this massive betrayal, my cell phone vibrated violently.
It was the head nurse from the pediatric intensive care unit.

"Rachel, you need to get here right now," the nurse whispered frantically.
"Your husband just bypassed hospital security, and he is trying to check Lily out against medical advice."
