Chapter 8 - The Interception

The captain laughed mockingly, but he was legally obligated to grant me one monitored phone call.

He dialed the number on the wall-mounted phone and held the receiver to my ear, a smug smile on his face.

My sister Chloe answered on the third ring, her voice groggy from being woken up in the middle of the night.

I spoke rapidly, telling her to log into my cloud account using the master password we had shared since college.

I told her to download the audio files from tonight and to bring them to the station immediately.

The captain realized too late what I was doing and violently slammed the receiver down to disconnect the line.

He grabbed my bruised shoulder, growling that a digital audio file wouldn't save me in his town.

He left the room, locking the heavy steel door behind him and leaving me in total darkness.

Hours passed in the freezing room, and I prayed silently that Chloe had understood my frantic instructions.

Eventually, the door swung open, but it wasn't the captain who walked in.

It was Brandon and Patricia, looking completely victorious as they prepared to sign the final release forms.

Brandon smirked at me, whispering that he was taking our son home and that I would never see him again.

Just as they turned to leave, a massive commotion erupted in the main lobby outside the interrogation room.

The captain's voice boomed angrily, demanding to know who dared to bypass his front desk security.

Chloe stepped into the doorway of the interrogation room, holding a glowing laptop in one hand.

And standing right behind her were three federal agents wearing tactical windbreakers, completely outranking everyone in the building.
