Chapter 2 - The Shattered Wood

The sound of tearing wood echoed loudly over the dispatcher’s frantic questions coming from my phone.
I watched in horror as the crowbar ripped the strike plate completely out of the wall.
Brandon kicked the center of the door with his heavy work boot.
The top hinge snapped, sending a shower of sharp splinters raining down onto my hair.
I turned my body to shield my baby, letting the debris hit my back instead of his fragile skin.
The door finally gave way, collapsing inward and pinning my leg painfully against the side of the tub.
Brandon stood in the doorway, his chest heaving and his eyes wide with a manic fury.
Patricia was right behind him, her hands already reaching out like claws to snatch my child.
I kicked out wildly with my free leg, striking Brandon square in the kneecap.
He stumbled backward with a curse, giving me just enough room to pull my trapped leg free.
I grabbed my phone from the sink, ensuring the call was still connected.
Patricia lunged past her son, her perfectly manicured fingers grabbing a fistful of my bloodstained shirt.
She screamed at me to hand over the boy immediately.
I twisted my body hard, throwing my elbow backward into her chest to break her grip.
She gasped and stumbled back against the vanity mirror, knocking several glass bottles into the sink.
Brandon recovered his balance and lunged toward me with terrifying speed.
I closed my eyes and braced for the inevitable impact.

But the heavy, unmistakable sound of a police siren suddenly blared from the street right outside our bedroom window.
Brandon froze, but instead of backing away, he pulled a heavy hunting knife from his back pocket.
