Chapter 1 - The Breach

The metallic scrape of the key sliding into the lock sent a fresh wave of ice through my veins.

I scrambled backward on the cold tile floor, clutching my newborn tightly against my chest.

The dispatcher’s voice echoed softly from the phone on the sink, assuring me that officers were only two minutes away.

But two minutes felt like an eternity when a wooden door was the only thing keeping my abusers at bay.

I heard the distinct click of the deadbolt disengaging.

The brass knob began to turn slowly.

I didn’t think about what to do, I simply reacted on pure instinct.

I threw my weight against the door, sliding my back down the wood until I was wedged firmly between it and the edge of the bathtub.

The door pushed inward, hitting my shoulder with a violent, agonizing thud.

Brandon grunted from the other side, his false patience completely evaporating into rage.

He slammed his shoulder against the door again, the sheer force of the impact rattling my teeth.

My son let out a sharp, terrified cry.

I quickly covered his exposed ear with my trembling hand, whispering that Mommy had him safe.

The wood began to splinter and crack near the middle hinges.

Patricia’s voice hissed through the gap, telling him to just break it down before the neighbors heard the commotion.

I braced my boots against the porcelain tub, using every ounce of my leg strength to keep the door shut.

But the intense pressure suddenly stopped.

There was a moment of suffocating, terrifying silence in the hallway.

Then, the heavy steel blade of a crowbar slid through the crack above the lock, violently prying the doorframe apart.
