Chapter 6 - The Cloud Backup

The cold rain hit my bruised face as the officers escorted me out of my own house and into the back of a police cruiser.
I watched through the rain-streaked window as paramedics checked on my baby inside the brightly lit ambulance.
Patricia was standing right next to the paramedics, playing the role of the loving grandmother perfectly.
I leaned my head back against the hard plastic seat, tears of absolute despair streaming down my swollen cheeks.
The officer driving the cruiser adjusted his rearview mirror and looked at me with a strange expression.
He didn't look angry; he looked highly skeptical of the neat little story my husband had just sold his colleagues.
I took a shaky breath and begged the officer to listen to me for just one minute.
I explained that modern baby monitors don't just record to physical SD cards anymore.
They connect directly to home Wi-Fi and upload the audio to a secure cloud server managed by the manufacturing company.
I told him that the audio files of their premeditated plot were sitting safely in my digital account.
The officer frowned, slowing the cruiser down as he processed this new piece of information.
He asked me if I knew the login credentials for the cloud account.
I nodded frantically, giving him the email and the exact password.
He pulled over to the shoulder of the dark road, pulling out his precinct-issued tablet to verify my claim.

But as he typed the information into the system, his police radio crackled to life with an aggressive command.
The precinct captain's voice ordered the officer to bring me to the station immediately, specifically forbidding any independent investigation.
