Chapter 4 - The Twisted Truth

Patricia’s eyes were cold and dead as she held the heavy shears inches from my son.

She told me in a terrifyingly calm whisper that if I made a single sound, she would end everything right now.

The pounding at the front door grew violently loud.

A deep voice shouted "Police, open up!" from the porch.

I stared at the sharp metal blades, my heart hammering against my bruised ribs.

Suddenly, the front door was kicked open with a massive crash.

Three armed police officers flooded into the living room with their flashlights sweeping the dark house.

The instant the officers entered, Patricia completely changed her demeanor.

She dropped the shears onto the rug, fell to her knees, and began sobbing hysterically.

She screamed that I had gone insane, that I was trying to hurt the baby, and that she was only trying to protect her grandchild.

Brandon staggered out of the hallway, his head bleeding from where I had struck him with the lamp.

He raised his empty hands, crying out that his wife was having a psychotic break and had just attacked him.

The officers immediately turned their flashlights and drawn weapons directly toward me.

I was standing there, covered in bruises, clutching a baby, and standing right next to the dropped weapon.

An officer commanded me to drop to my knees and surrender the child immediately.

I tried to speak, to tell them about the 911 call and the baby monitor recordings.

But as I looked toward the hallway where my phone had fallen, I saw Patricia’s foot subtly slide over the device.

She crushed the phone completely into the hardwood floor, severing my only connection to the truth.
