Chapter 3 - The Dragging

The wail of the siren grew louder, illuminating the frosted bathroom window with flashing red and blue lights.
Brandon’s eyes darted from the window to the heavy blade in his hand.
Patricia grabbed his arm and whispered frantically that they needed to get me out the back door immediately.
Brandon lunged at me, ignoring my screams as he twisted his hand into the roots of my hair.
He pulled me hard toward the hallway, dragging my knees across the broken wood of the bathroom door.
I wrapped both of my arms tightly around my baby, refusing to let go even as white-hot pain exploded in my scalp.
The dispatcher was still yelling through my phone, which had fallen onto the hallway carpet during the struggle.
I kicked wildly at the walls, trying to catch my foot on the doorframe to stop our momentum.
Brandon cursed, dragging me relentlessly toward the back staircase that led to the garage.
I knew that if he got me into a car, neither I nor my son would ever be seen again.
I spotted a heavy bronze lamp sitting on the hallway console table.
As he pulled me past it, I reached out with one desperate, trembling hand and grabbed the base.
I swung the heavy metal object backward with all my remaining strength.
The bronze base connected with the side of Brandon’s head with a sickening crunch.
He groaned and dropped to his knees, his grip on my hair finally loosening.
I scrambled away, clutching my baby tightly as loud, commanding knocks pounded against the front door.

But as I turned toward the living room, Patricia stepped directly into my path.
She was holding a long kitchen shears, the sharp blades pointed directly at my baby’s swaddled blanket.
