Chapter 9 - The Warehouse Trap

The echoing footsteps of heavy combat boots approached the bullet-riddled sedan.

I pulled Maya tightly against my chest, covering her completely with my own body.

The back door was violently yanked open, tearing the metal hinges apart.

Charles Whitmore stood there holding a high-powered assault rifle.

"You have been a very difficult woman to kill, Evelyn," Charles sighed in annoyance.

"You will never get away with this," I spat fiercely, glaring at the man who ruined my life.

Charles laughed and grabbed me roughly by the hair, dragging me out of the vehicle.

He pulled Maya out next, shoving us both to the dirty concrete floor of the warehouse.

"I already have," Charles smiled, aiming the rifle directly at Maya's trembling chest.

"Give me the black ledger, and I might let the girl live long enough to say goodbye," he demanded.

I slowly reached into my jacket and pulled out the small black book.

"Do not give it to him, mother," Maya pleaded, crying softly.

It was the first time she had called me mother, and it broke my heart entirely.

I tossed the ledger onto the floor near Charles's expensive leather shoes.

He bent down to pick it up, his eyes gleaming with absolute victory.

"You really are incredibly naive, Evelyn," Charles mocked as he raised the weapon again.

He placed his finger firmly on the trigger, preparing to end our lives.

"Actually, Charles, I am simply buying time," I replied calmly.

Suddenly, massive floodlights illuminated the entire warehouse from every possible angle.

Dozens of armored SWAT vehicles smashed through the fragile aluminum walls of the building.

"Drop your weapon immediately!" a voice roared through a heavy megaphone.

I smiled at Charles, tapping the small microphone hidden beneath my collar.

"I have been broadcasting our entire conversation to the federal task force for the last ten minutes," I whispered.
