Chapter 6 - The Antidote

I stumbled backward, hitting the hospital wall as my legs lost all their strength.

Maya caught me before I hit the floor, screaming for someone to help us.

Bianca turned and sprinted toward the emergency stairwell to escape.

"Do not let her get away!" I choked out, pointing a heavy finger at the fleeing woman.

A doctor rushed over, catching me as my eyes rolled back into my head.

The next few hours were a terrifying, dark void of fading consciousness and flashing lights.

When I finally opened my eyes, the harsh fluorescent lights of a hospital room blinded me.

Maya was sitting by my bed, her face stained with tears.

"You are awake," she sobbed, throwing her arms gently around my neck.

"What happened?" I asked, my throat feeling like it was filled with dry sand.

"The doctor said you were injected with a massive dose of insulin, but they gave you the antidote just in time," Maya explained.

I tried to sit up, my head pounding with a severe, throbbing ache.

"Did they catch Bianca?" I demanded urgently.

Maya shook her head, looking incredibly defeated.

"She vanished before the security guards could even reach the stairwell," Maya sighed.

Suddenly, the heavy door of my hospital room swung open.

Two federal agents walked in, holding strict, unsmiling expressions.

"Evelyn Sterling, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of your husband," the lead agent announced.

I stared at him in absolute disbelief.

"I did not poison him, Charles Whitmore did!" I argued frantically.

"We have security footage of you handing Adrian a cup of water at the gala just before he was arrested," the agent replied.

Charles had framed me flawlessly, using my own final interaction with my husband against me.

The agent pulled out a pair of handcuffs and approached my bed.
