Chapter 1 - The Silver Bracelet

I stared at the young woman standing in the doorway of the grand ballroom.
Her hands were shaking violently as she held up the silver bracelet.
The delicate metal caught the light from the crystal chandeliers above us.
It was the exact same piece of jewelry my father had custom-made for my newborn.
I took a slow step forward.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"What did you just say?" I whispered.
The young woman swallowed hard and looked nervously at the federal agents beside her.
"My name is Maya, and Adrian paid Bianca's parents to hide me in a rural town for nineteen years," she said.
The entire ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers.
Adrian struggled against the grips of the police officers.
"Do not listen to her, Evelyn!" he shouted desperately.
"She is a complete fraud hired to ruin our family!" Adrian screamed.
I did not even look at the man I had once called my husband.
I reached out and gently took Maya's trembling hand.
Her eyes were the exact shade of hazel that my mother had passed down to me.
There was no denying the blood running through her veins.
Charles Whitmore stepped forward, looking entirely bewildered by the revelation.
"If this is true, it changes the entire legal structure of the Sterling trust," Charles announced to the room.
Adrian suddenly stopped struggling and began to laugh.
It was a cold, cruel sound that sent a shiver down my spine.
"You think you have won, Evelyn?" Adrian mocked.
"You have absolutely no idea what is waiting for you inside the family vault," he added.
The officers dragged him through the heavy wooden doors.
His laughter echoed down the marble hallway until it finally faded away.
I looked back at Maya, who was now clutching her silver bracelet tightly.
"What is in the vault?" I asked her gently.
May you like
Maya pulled a crumpled piece of paper from the pocket of her black dress.
"Adrian told Bianca that if I ever tried to find you, a second will would destroy us both," Maya revealed.
