Chapter 8 - The Sniper's Mark

I opened the black ledger and scanned the meticulously handwritten pages.
It contained exact dates, offshore account numbers, and records of payments made to doctors and judges.
"This is enough evidence to put Charles away for multiple lifetimes," I whispered in awe.
"He ordered me to actually kill you at the hospital, but I knew he would silence me next," Bianca admitted, tears welling in her eyes.
"Why did you participate in this nightmare to begin with?" Maya asked from beside me.
Bianca looked at Maya in the rearview mirror with a look of genuine regret.
"My parents were deeply in debt, and Charles offered to save them if they raised you in secret," Bianca explained.
"When I got older, I wanted a piece of the fortune, so I agreed to seduce Adrian and help ruin Evelyn."
We drove in tense silence until we reached an abandoned industrial park near the river.
Bianca parked the sedan inside a rusted, empty warehouse to hide from police helicopters.
"We need to call the real FBI director, he is the only one not on Charles's payroll," I decided.
I borrowed Bianca's phone and dialed the emergency secure line I knew by heart.
Before the call could even connect, a deafening crack echoed through the massive warehouse.
The driver's side window shattered completely into a million tiny pieces of glass.
Bianca gasped loudly, dropping her head forward onto the steering wheel.
A dark pool of blood immediately began to spread across the dashboard.
A sniper had just shot her directly through the windshield.
"Get down!" I screamed, pulling Maya onto the floorboards of the back seat.

Another bullet ripped through the metal roof of the car, missing my head by mere inches.
We were completely trapped in the dark, and the shooter was moving closer.
