Chapter 7 - The Desperate Flight

I refused to let Charles destroy my family again.

As the federal agent reached for my wrist, Maya suddenly threw a heavy metal water pitcher directly at his head.

The pitcher struck him hard, causing him to stumble backward into his partner.

"Run, Evelyn!" Maya screamed at the top of her lungs.

I ripped the IV line from my arm, ignoring the sharp pain and the sudden bleeding.

We sprinted out of the hospital room, dodging startled nurses and medical carts.

The alarm system began to blare loudly throughout the entire medical facility.

We pushed through the heavy doors of the emergency stairwell and descended four flights of stairs.

We burst out into the cold night air of the hospital parking garage.

"We need a car," I panted, scanning the dimly lit concrete rows.

A sleek black sedan suddenly pulled up in front of us, the passenger door flying open.

"Get in right now!" a familiar voice yelled from the driver's seat.

It was Bianca.

She was no longer wearing the medical scrubs, but she looked absolutely terrified.

I hesitated, wondering if this was simply another one of Charles's deadly traps.

"He is going to kill me too, Evelyn, please get in!" Bianca pleaded frantically.

With federal agents bursting into the garage behind us, we had no other choice.

Maya and I jumped into the back seat, and Bianca slammed her foot onto the gas pedal.

We crashed through the wooden exit barrier and sped onto the dark highway.

"Why should I trust the woman who just tried to murder me?" I demanded angrily.

Bianca gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were completely white.

"Because I injected you with saline, not insulin," Bianca confessed.

I stared at her in shock as she reached into her jacket pocket.

She pulled out a small, black ledger and tossed it into my lap.

"That book contains every single illegal transaction Charles ever made," Bianca said.
