Chapter 2 - The Trap

The deafening wail of the fire alarm made my ears ring.

Marcus rushed to the heavy doors and pulled desperately at the handles.

They were electronically sealed and would not budge an inch.

Smoke rapidly filled the room, making it nearly impossible to breathe.

I coughed violently and pressed my hospital gown over my nose.

Isabella stood calmly near the window, completely unfazed by the toxic air.

She had already placed a small respirator mask over her mouth.

Marcus turned around and lunged at her to grab the mask.

She easily side-stepped his attack and kicked his knee with her sharp heel.

He stumbled backward, choking on the thick gray smoke.

I tried to crawl toward the emergency call button near my bed.

A sharp, agonizing cramp suddenly ripped through my abdomen.

The mysterious drug she had injected into my IV was finally taking effect.

I screamed in pain and curled into a tight ball on the marble floor.

Marcus crawled to my side and wrapped his arms around my trembling shoulders.

Isabella laughed, her voice muffled slightly by the plastic mask.

She walked over to the oxygen tank sitting by my bedside table.

Instead of turning it on to help us, she grabbed a heavy wrench and smashed the valve completely off.

The pure oxygen hissed violently into the room, mixing with the smoke and heat.

She picked up a metal chair and smashed the glass window facing the street.

Isabella climbed onto the ledge, looking down at us one last time.

She casually tossed a lit match into the oxygen-rich room before jumping out onto the fire escape.
