Chapter 6 - The Wrong Target

The doctor clutched his knee, his face twisted in agony.

I stood over him, my hands shaking violently.

I demanded to know why he was trying to smother me.

He looked at the empty bed and then up at me in pure terror.

I was not trying to hurt you, he gasped.

He pointed a trembling finger at the pillow he had dropped.

There was a syringe hidden underneath it.

He told me someone had ordered him to inject a lethal dose of potassium into my IV line.

I asked him who gave the order.

He swallowed hard, sweat dripping down his pale forehead.

He said a man threatened to kill his family if he refused.

He described the man perfectly.

It was Andrew.

My husband had bypassed the failed assassin and found leverage over a doctor instead.

I asked the doctor where Andrew was right now.

He said Andrew was waiting in a black SUV in the parking garage.

I knew I had to run before Andrew came up to check on the doctor's progress.

I unlocked the bathroom door and grabbed my baby.

I told the doctor that if he warned Andrew, I would expose his role in this murder plot.

The doctor nodded frantically from the floor.

I wrapped my daughter in a warm blanket and slipped out into the hallway.

I avoided the main elevators and took the service stairs.

My body screamed in pain with every step I took down the concrete stairwell.

I finally reached the basement level.

I pushed open the heavy metal door leading to the parking garage.

I scanned the dark rows of cars.

A black SUV was idling near the exit ramp.

I crept behind a concrete pillar to get a closer look.

The driver's side window was rolled down.

I saw Andrew sitting in the driver's seat.

But he was not alone in the car.

The blonde woman from the pharmacy parking lot was sitting in the passenger seat, kissing him passionately.
