Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I walked out of the basement into the cool night air.
Dozens of police cars and federal agents surrounded the isolated farmhouse.
Red and blue lights flashed across the trees.
I saw my father being shoved into the back of a heavily armored transport van.
Agent Vance wrapped a warm blanket around my shoulders.
He handed me a cup of hot tea from a thermos.
He assured me that Andrew and his fake wife had been intercepted at the airport.
The entire syndicate network was crashing down tonight.
I looked down at my sleeping daughter, finally feeling completely safe.
The nightmare was over.
I had survived the betrayal of my husband and my own flesh and blood.
I thanked Agent Vance profusely for saving our lives.
He smiled warmly and patted my shoulder.
He said it was his job to protect innocent people.
He gestured for me to get into the back of an unmarked black SUV.
He said he would personally drive me to a secure hotel where doctors were waiting to check on the baby.
I climbed into the plush leather seat and settled my daughter in my lap.
Agent Vance closed the door and got into the driver's seat.
He started the engine and drove away from the flashing lights of the crime scene.
We drove in silence for ten minutes down a dark, empty highway.
I leaned my head against the window, feeling exhaustion finally overtake me.
I noticed Agent Vance reach into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out his phone and made a call on speaker.
The line connected after two rings.
A familiar, gravelly voice spoke through the car's speakers.
Is it done, my father asked.
Agent Vance smiled and looked at me through the rearview mirror.
Yes, sir, the agent replied smoothly.
The FBI bought the raid entirely, and I have your daughter and the baby secured in my car.
May you like
Agent Vance locked the doors from the master switch and turned off the headlights.
Where do you want me to bury them, he asked.
