Chapter 4 - The Alibi

I dropped the phone on the bed.
My entire body shook with a violent chill.
My father had been estranged from me for five years.
We had a massive falling out over my inheritance from my late mother.
I never imagined he would conspire with my husband to have me killed.
I needed answers before they realized I was still alive.
I picked up the burner phone again.
I typed a quick text message to my father.
It is done, I wrote.
The reply came almost instantly.
Good work.
Andrew is waiting for you at the safe house.
I stared at the screen, my blood turning to ice.
I had to find out where this safe house was.
Just then, the hospital room door creaked open.
I shoved the burner phone under my pillow.
A young nurse walked in carrying a clipboard.
She smiled warmly and asked how I was feeling.
I lied and told her I was just tired.
She checked my vitals and wrote something down.
Before she left, she turned back to me with a confused expression.
A man called the front desk asking for you, she said.
He claimed to be your husband.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
I asked her what she told him.
She said she told him I was resting comfortably with our healthy baby girl.
I closed my eyes in absolute despair.
He knows I am alive.
The nurse stepped closer and lowered her voice.
May you like
But the strange thing is, he did not ask which hospital you were in.
He told me he was already in the lobby coming up to see you.
