Chapter 5 - The Approaching Footsteps

Panic gripped my throat like a vice.
Andrew was in the building.
He knew the hit woman had failed.
He was coming up here to finish the job himself.
I looked at my newborn daughter sleeping peacefully in the bassinet beside me.
I could not let him anywhere near her.
I threw off the thin hospital blanket and forced myself out of bed.
Pain flared through my abdomen, but adrenaline pushed it away.
I grabbed the bassinet and rolled it toward the bathroom.
I hid my baby behind the heavy wooden door.
I locked the bathroom from the inside and climbed back into the hospital bed.
I arranged the pillows under the blanket to make it look like I was sleeping.
I slipped out of the bed and pressed myself into the dark corner behind the main door.
I gripped the heavy metal IV pole with both hands.
The hallway outside was dead silent.
Then I heard the distinct sound of heavy boots walking down the linoleum floor.
The footsteps stopped right outside my room.
The door handle slowly turned.
The door pushed inward, blocking me from view in my dark corner.
A tall silhouette stepped into the dim light of the room.
He approached the bed silently.
He raised a pillow high in the air, ready to smother whoever was underneath.
I swung the heavy metal pole with every ounce of strength I had left.
The metal struck the back of his knees with a sickening crunch.
The man let out a muffled groan and collapsed to the floor.
I scrambled to turn on the overhead lights.
The bright fluorescent bulbs illuminated the room.
I looked down at the man groaning on the floor.
May you like
It was not Andrew.
It was the young doctor who had delivered my baby just hours ago.
