Chapter 3 - The Empty Room

I survived the night.
My daughter was born at two in the morning.
They placed her on my chest, and for a moment, the world was perfect.
Then the nurses moved me to a private recovery room.
The silence of the hospital room was suffocating.
I looked at the black leather purse resting on the bedside table.
The ultrasound photo was still burned into my memory.
Andrew was having a child with the woman who was hired to kill me.
I reached into the purse to search for more clues.
My fingers brushed against a cold, metallic object.
It was a burner phone.
The screen was cracked, but it had fifty percent battery left.
I pressed the power button.
There was only one contact saved in the phone.
The name was simply listed as The Fixer.
I hesitated for a moment before hitting the call button.
The line rang three times before someone answered.
A deep, gravelly voice spoke through the speaker.
Is it done, the man asked.
I held my breath, terrified to make a sound.
I asked you if the wife is dead, the man repeated impatiently.
I recognized that voice immediately.
It was not Andrew.
May you like
It was my own father.
He was the one asking if I had been killed.
