Chapter 9 - The Custody Battle

I stood up immediately, wiping the tears from my face and squaring my shoulders.

I was no longer the heartbroken wife; I was a woman ready for an absolute war.

"You have absolutely no legal standing here, Evelyn," I told the arrogant matriarch calmly.

Evelyn's lawyers stepped forward, placing a massive stack of legal injunctions on the metal table.

"As the grandmother, Evelyn is filing for immediate emergency custody of the twins," her lead attorney stated smugly.

"David and Christopher are both facing decades in federal prison, and Michelle is an unfit mother facing fraud charges."

Evelyn smiled at me with a cold, calculating expression.

"Those babies belong to the Lawson family, Victoria, and you will not take my heirs away from me."

Harrison stepped up right beside me, his brilliant legal mind shifting into high gear.

"Actually, Evelyn, you might want to read the fine print of your own precious family trust," Harrison countered smoothly.

He pulled a digital copy of the Lawson trust fund rules on his tablet and turned it toward them.

"The trust clearly states that control goes to the biological parents of the first born heirs."

Evelyn frowned, completely failing to understand Harrison's brilliant legal maneuver.

"Since David is a convicted felon, his claim to the trust is permanently nullified by the morality clause," Harrison explained.

"Which leaves Victoria, the biological mother, as the sole managing guardian of the children and the entire corporate empire."

Evelyn's jaw dropped in absolute horror as the realization finally hit her.

Her beloved family legacy, the millions of dollars, and the company were now entirely in my hands.

"You cannot do this, you are not a real Lawson," Evelyn shrieked, losing all of her refined composure.

"I am the only competent person left to fix the massive mess your sons created," I replied with absolute authority.

I turned to Detective Miller, who was watching the exchange with a highly amused smile.

"Where are the twins right now?" I asked him softly.

"Child Protective Services placed them in a luxury foster suite an hour ago, pending family placement," the detective answered.

"Take me to them right now," I demanded, feeling a sudden, fierce maternal instinct rising fiercely in my chest.

Harrison and I left Evelyn screaming furiously at her useless lawyers in the conference room.

We drove to the secure facility, my heart pounding with a mixture of terror and profound hope.

A social worker led us into a quiet, softly lit nursery painted in warm pastel colors.

Michelle was sitting in a rocking chair, crying softly as she watched the babies sleep in their cribs.

She looked up at me, her eyes completely filled with absolute remorse and deep sorrow.

"I am so sorry, Victoria, for absolutely everything," Michelle whispered brokenly.

I looked at her, knowing she was going to serve a significant sentence in a federal facility very soon.

"Sign the permanent custody papers over to me, Michelle, and I will ensure you get a fair lawyer," I offered firmly.

Michelle nodded rapidly, incredibly grateful that the babies would be safe with me.

I walked over to the cribs, looking down at the beautiful, sleeping faces of my biological children.
