Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

I stared at the phone in pure disbelief as Michelle sobbed hysterically into the receiver.
"Why should I help you after you notarized a fraudulent ten-million-dollar loan to frame me?" I demanded coldly.
"Christopher forced me to sign that document months ago to hide his failing investments," Michelle cried.
The truth suddenly clicked perfectly into place in my mind.
Christopher had forged my signature long before our divorce, and Michelle had blindly helped him cover it up.
Now, David was using their stupid, desperate crime to leverage control over the entire family.
"Where are you right now, Michelle?" Harrison asked, leaning closer to the phone.
"We are trapped inside the old Vextor Dynamics shipping warehouse on the edge of town," she whispered frantically.
"David's security men are outside the door, and David is forcing Christopher to sign over his remaining personal assets."
I looked at Harrison, silently asking him what our next move should be.
"If Christopher signs those papers, David legally controls everything, and you will definitely take the fall for the forged loan," Harrison warned me.
"Michelle, you need to find the original forged document and bring it to me," I ordered her.
"I have it hidden in my diaper bag," Michelle confessed.
"I stole it from Christopher's safe because I knew he would eventually betray me too."
I felt a sharp surge of adrenaline rush through my veins.
If I could get my hands on that original document, Harrison could prove the signature was a digital forgery.
"I am coming to get you, but you need to find a way out of that room right now," I told her.
"There is a small ventilation window near the ceiling, I think I can squeeze through it," she replied.
"Meet me at the abandoned gas station two miles down the highway in exactly twenty minutes," I instructed.
I ended the call and grabbed my car keys with absolute determination.
Harrison grabbed his coat and followed me right out the door without a second thought.
"You are not going into a dangerous situation completely alone," he insisted, his protective tone making my heart race.
We drove through the dark city streets, the tension inside the car feeling incredibly thick.
When we pulled up to the abandoned gas station, the area was completely silent and pitch black.
I stepped out of the car, looking around desperately for any sign of my former best friend.
A sudden, sharp beam of a heavy flashlight hit me directly in the eyes, blinding me instantly.

"Michelle isn't coming, Victoria," David's smooth, sinister voice echoed from the darkness.
Harrison stepped in front of me, shielding me as the sound of a gun cocking pierced the night air.
