Chapter 5 - The Distraction

I stared down the dark barrel of the silenced pistol, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.

Gavin’s hand was perfectly steady, showing absolutely no remorse for shooting his own brother-in-law.

Mason writhed on the stone floor, sobbing and clutching his bleeding leg in agony.

Gavin ordered me to look at him, demanding that I beg for my life before he pulled the trigger.

I lifted my chin proudly, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me break.

I told him that even if I died, he would spend the rest of his miserable life rotting in a concrete cell.

Gavin let out a cold, arrogant laugh, his finger slowly tightening on the heavy trigger.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the wine cellar was violently blown completely off its iron hinges.

A blinding flashbang grenade rolled across the floor, erupting in a deafening wave of white light and sound.

Gavin screamed, dropping his pistol as he covered his blinded eyes.

Elias’s elite tactical team flooded into the cellar, their laser sights cutting through the thick, acrid smoke.

Two heavily armed men tackled Gavin to the floor, aggressively pinning his arms behind his back.

Elias stepped through the ruined doorway, stepping calmly over the shattered steel.

He offered me his hand, pulling me up from the cold stone floor and wrapping a protective arm around me.

He looked down at Gavin with absolute disgust, promising that the Crestview deal was officially dead.

I walked out of the cellar without looking back, leaving my abusive husband bleeding in the dust.

We hurried through the basement corridors, heading toward the private rear exit of the gala.

As we reached the grand lobby, I noticed someone slipping quietly out the glass side doors.

It was Charlotte Gable, clutching a heavy metal briefcase and looking nervously over her shoulder.

I told Elias that she had the briefcase containing the physical hard drives for the offshore accounts.

I broke away from the security team and sprinted across the lobby to stop her from escaping.

Just as my hand touched the glass door to follow her, a massive shockwave threw me backward.

A terrifying explosion ripped through the upper floor of the gala, sending shattered glass and fire raining down upon us.
