Chapter 4 - The Wine Cellar

The heavy steel door of the wine cellar slammed shut behind me with a terrifying echo.
The guards threw me roughly onto the cold stone floor, completely ruining the hem of my red gown.
I slowly pushed myself up, brushing the dirt from my bruised knees.
Gavin and Mason walked into the dim cellar, locking the deadbolt from the inside.
Mason looked incredibly nervous, his hands shaking as he adjusted his expensive silk tie.
Gavin rolled up the sleeves of his tuxedo, a look of pure, unhinged hatred burning in his eyes.
He stepped toward me, raising his hand to strike me just like he had the night before.
I did not flinch, nor did I look away from his furious gaze.
I reached into my small clutch purse and pulled out my smartphone.
I turned the screen toward them, displaying a large red countdown timer that was ticking backward from ten minutes.
I explained that Elias Thorne had designed a dead-man’s switch for the hidden camera footage.
If I did not enter a secure, rotating password every ten minutes, the video of Mason confessing to fraud would automatically blast to every news outlet in the country.
Mason’s face drained of all color, turning an absolutely sickly shade of pale gray.
He grabbed Gavin’s shoulder, begging him to stop and listen to reason.
Mason cried that they were going to lose everything, including their freedom, if the FBI saw that video.
Gavin aggressively shoved Mason backward, sending the CFO crashing into a rack of expensive vintage wines.
Gavin screamed that he would not let a pathetic, worthless woman destroy his nine-billion-dollar empire.
He reached inside his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a sleek, silver pistol with a heavy silencer attached to the barrel.
He aimed the weapon directly at Mason’s chest, causing the CFO to whimper in sheer terror.
Gavin coldly stated that he no longer needed a cowardly financial officer.
Without a second of hesitation, Gavin pulled the trigger.
The silenced weapon let out a sharp hiss, and Mason collapsed to the floor, screaming as blood poured from his shattered kneecap.

Gavin then turned the smoking gun slowly toward my forehead.
He smiled wickedly, declaring that he would just tell the police Mason tried to assault me, and he had to shoot us both in self-defense.
