Chapter 2 - The Penthouse Trap

The impact threw me against the reinforced glass of the SUV.

Sparks flew through the pouring rain as our driver struggled to maintain control of the heavy vehicle.

Elias pressed a red button on the console, yelling for his security team to engage evasive maneuvers.

The second black SUV behind us suddenly accelerated, violently ramming the armored truck off the wet highway.

We sped away into the stormy night, leaving the burning wreckage far behind us.

An hour later, we arrived safely at a highly secure penthouse overlooking downtown Minneapolis.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wrapping a thick cashmere blanket tightly around my shoulders.

Gavin was truly trying to have me killed before the divorce papers were even filed.

Elias connected my metal pen to his mainframe computer to extract the audio recordings.

We listened to the chilling sound of Gavin’s belt striking my skin, followed by Mason bragging about the hidden funds.

Elias promised me that he would cancel the 3.2-billion-dollar Crestview investment by morning.

I shook my head, a dark and vengeful anger finally replacing my fear.

I told Elias that simply canceling the deal was not nearly enough of a punishment.

I wanted to completely drain the forty million dollars Mason had hidden in the offshore shell companies.

I sat down at the computer and typed in the backdoor access codes I had secretly installed on Gavin’s network months ago.

The SwiftFreight financial servers opened immediately, displaying dozens of hidden international accounts.

I initiated a transfer protocol to move all the stolen money into an untraceable charity fund.

The computer screen suddenly flashed violently red, denying the transaction.

A warning message popped up, demanding a dual biometric authorization to move the funds.

It required Gavin’s thumbprint and my own retinal scan.

I realized with absolute horror why Gavin hadn't killed me in the bedroom last night.

He needed me alive just long enough to access the offshore fortune.

Elias’s phone suddenly buzzed with an incoming text message from an unknown number.

He read the message out loud, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

The message was a live video feed of my younger sister sleeping peacefully in her college dorm room.
