Chapter 1 - The Black SUVs

The man with the umbrella closed the heavy door behind me, shutting out the violent roar of the summer storm.
I sank into the luxurious leather seat, my wet clothes clinging to my trembling skin.
Sitting across from me in the dim light of the cabin was Elias Thorne.
He was the billionaire founder of Crestview Partners, the very man my husband was desperately trying to impress.
Elias poured a glass of amber whiskey and handed it to me with a sympathetic smile.
I took a burning sip, letting the heat steady my shaking hands.
For two years, I had been working secretly for Elias as an undercover corporate auditor.
My marriage to Gavin had started as genuine love, but when his greed turned him into a monster, I contacted Elias.
I reached into my damp sports bag and pulled out the small metal pen.
I also unclipped the tiny camera from my jacket lapel and placed them both on the mahogany console.
Elias picked up the devices, his eyes turning cold and dangerous.
I told him that I had everything we needed to completely destroy SwiftFreight and send Gavin to prison.
Elias nodded slowly, but his expression remained unusually grim.
He tapped a few keys on his encrypted tablet and turned the screen toward me.
The document on the screen was a highly classified financial ledger.
It showed a massive, sudden withdrawal from SwiftFreight’s emergency reserves.
I asked him what the document meant.
Elias looked at me with a mixture of pity and absolute fury.
He explained that Gavin had not just forced me to sign away my rights to the marital assets.
Less than twenty-four hours ago, Gavin had taken out a fifty-million-dollar life insurance policy in my name.
My blood ran entirely cold as the reality of his words washed over me.
Gavin was not planning to let me walk away with nothing.
May you like
My husband was planning to make sure I never walked away at all.
Suddenly, our SUV violently swerved as a massive armored truck slammed into the side of our vehicle.
