Chapter 9 - The Fire

I screamed a desperate warning at the very top of my lungs.
The detective spun around fast but my husband ruthlessly fired the pistol twice.
The bullets hit the detective securely in the shoulder and he collapsed heavily to the floor.
My husband turned his deranged eyes toward me and raised the smoking gun again.
He told me that if he could not have the children then absolutely no one would.
I grabbed a heavy glass flask of raw corrosive acid from the nearest workstation.
I threw it directly at his face with absolutely perfect aim.
He screamed in horrifying agony as the glass shattered violently against his skin.
The corrosive liquid melted through his white protective suit instantly.
He dropped the gun and fell to the floor clawing blindly at his burning face.
His mother shrieked in absolute horror and crawled desperately toward her flailing son.
I grabbed the injured detective firmly by his tactical vest and dragged him toward the heavy exit doors.
The emergency facility alarms began screaming loudly overhead.
The splashed acid had spilled into the main chemical vat and triggered a catastrophic chain reaction.
Thick toxic smoke poured rapidly from the steel ventilation shafts.
Bright orange flames erupted fiercely across the entire laboratory floor.
I pulled the detective into the concrete stairwell and hit the emergency lockdown button.
The heavy blast doors slammed completely shut.
They permanently sealed my husband and his screaming mother inside the burning chemical room.
I could hear their muffled agonizing screams echoing through the thick steel.
I carried my children and helped the bleeding detective climb the long concrete stairs.
The intense heat behind us grew absolutely unbearable.
We finally reached the ground floor but the main exit was blocked by massive steel security shutters.

The entire facility had gone into a lethal automated quarantine mode.
