Chapter 4 - The Safe House

I stared at the glowing phone screen in absolute horror.

My father looked at the phone and then looked back at me with a perfectly blank expression.

I slowly backed away from the sofa while shielding Lily carefully with my arms.

I asked him why the man who was torturing my baby had his highly private number.

My father let out a long and heavy sigh.

He placed his hunting rifle carefully on the kitchen counter.

He told me that my husband's family owned a massive underground pharmaceutical empire.

They had secretly paid for his expensive cancer treatments five years ago.

He fiercely swore he had no idea they were physically hurting me or the baby.

He thought they just wanted to keep tabs on his supposedly unstable daughter.

I screamed at him that I was never unstable.

My mother-in-law had been intentionally poisoning my food for years to make me look crazy.

My father wiped a stray tear from his weathered cheek and apologized profusely.

He promised to make things right and help me destroy their entire operation.

He walked over to a hidden floorboard and pulled out a heavy tactical bag filled with weapons.

He said we needed to hit their private research facility before they relocated the other children.

My heart skipped a painful beat at the casual mention of the other children.

I asked him how he knew about the hidden nursery in my basement.

I had never mentioned the other stolen babies to him.

The room fell into a terrifyingly silent pause.

My father slowly reached back toward the hunting rifle on the counter.

He said my husband paid very well for healthy test subjects.

And then he raised the barrel of the gun directly at my chest.
