Chapter 3 - The Escape

I clamped my hand over my own mouth to muffle my terrified gasp.
My husband slowly paced around the concrete room with a silver syringe in his hand.
He spoke in that same calm and terrifyingly reasonable voice.
He promised that if I handed Lily over right now, he would let me walk away unhurt.
I knew he was absolutely lying.
I tightened my grip on a heavy metal pipe I found near the washing machine.
He took another confident step closer to my hiding spot.
He said his mother was very angry about the brass lamp incident.
I swung the metal pipe with every ounce of desperate strength I had left.
It struck his wrist with a sickening crunch.
The silver syringe shattered violently against the concrete floor.
He screamed in sheer agony and dropped instantly to his knees.
I did not waste a single second looking back.
I kicked the heavy exit door open and ran into the freezing night air.
The hospital parking lot was completely chaotic with blaring alarms and confused medical staff.
I found an idling ambulance near the emergency room entrance with the keys still in the ignition.
I climbed frantically into the driver seat and locked the heavy doors.
I sped out of the hospital gates and merged recklessly onto the highway.
Lily whimpered softly against my chest.
I promised her over and over that mommy would keep her safe forever.
I drove for three agonizing hours until I reached my estranged father's cabin in the deep woods.
He was an honorable retired police captain who lived completely off the grid.
I banged aggressively on his wooden door until his porch light finally flicked on.
He opened the door holding a loaded hunting rifle.
His eyes widened in genuine shock when he saw the chemical burns on his granddaughter.
He pulled us inside quickly and immediately locked the heavy deadbolts.
I collapsed onto his sofa and finally let the exhausted tears fall.

Then his cell phone buzzed loudly on the coffee table.
The caller ID flashing on the screen belonged exclusively to my husband.
