Chapter 1 - The Hidden Safe

The detective placed a thick plastic folder on the table between us.
I stared at his exhausted face and asked him what he meant.
He opened the folder and pulled out a stack of official birth certificates.
There were four of them in total.
The first one belonged to my daughter Lily.
The other three had entirely different names but the exact same parents listed.
My husband and me.
I felt the blood drain completely from my face.
I told the detective that Lily was my only child.
He slid the second certificate closer to my trembling hands.
The name carefully printed on it was Leo.
That was the exact name I had chosen for the baby boy I miscarried five years ago.
I pointed at the paper and told him that this child had died in the second trimester.
The detective shook his head slowly.
He told me that his team found a hidden nursery behind a false wall in my basement.
There were three extra cribs inside that room.
And none of them had a single speck of dust on the mattresses.
I stood up so fast that my chair crashed loudly against the hospital floor.
My husband had faked my miscarriage and stolen my baby while I was heavily sedated.
The detective put a hand on his holster and looked nervously toward the closed door of the waiting room.
He whispered that we needed to leave the hospital immediately.

Before I could ask why, the lights in the entire corridor flickered and went completely dark.
Then the heavy metal lock on the hospital wing door clicked open.
