Chapter 2 - The Hospital Ambush

The emergency backup lights bathed the hospital corridor in a sickly red glow.
The detective drew his weapon and stepped defensively in front of me.
I could hear heavy combat boots marching rhythmically up the main stairwell.
I told him that Lily was still in the pediatric intensive care unit down the hall.
He grabbed my arm and dragged me fiercely toward the service elevator.
I fought back aggressively because I was never leaving my daughter behind again.
He swore under his breath and agreed to help me get her.
We sprinted down the hallway just as a squad of armed men in black tactical gear breached the double doors.
They were definitely not police officers.
They wore unmarked uniforms and carried suppressed automatic rifles.
We slipped into the pediatric ward and locked the heavy barricade door behind us.
Lily was crying softly in her glass incubator.
Her fragile skin was wrapped carefully in thick sterile bandages.
I scooped her up gently and pressed her warm body against my chest.
The detective pushed a massive medical cart against the door to buy us some precious time.
He pointed frantically toward the laundry chute at the end of the room.
He told me to climb down first and wait for him in the basement.
I secured Lily tightly inside my jacket and squeezed into the metal tube.
I slid down into the dark laundry room just as I heard a massive explosion from the floor above.
The door to the pediatric ward had been blown completely off its hinges.
I hid behind a rolling cart of dirty linens and held my breath.
The basement door swung open violently.
My husband walked into the room wearing a pristine tailored suit.
May you like
He looked directly at the cart I was hiding behind and smiled terribly.
He told me I could come out now because the detective was dead.
