Chapter 5 - Trust No One

I did not wait for my corrupted father to pull the trigger.

I threw a heavy ceramic mug directly at his face with blinding speed.

It shattered forcefully against his forehead and sent him stumbling backward.

The rifle fired wildly into the wooden ceiling.

Deafening ringing filled my ears as I sprinted desperately out the back door.

The freezing winter wind bit violently into my exposed skin.

I clutched Lily tightly inside my thick coat and ran deep into the dense forest.

I could hear my father cursing loudly behind me in the darkness.

The terrifying sound of snapping twigs echoed rapidly in the pitch black woods.

I knew these woods better than anyone because I played here constantly as a child.

I hid completely still inside a hollowed out redwood tree near the frozen creek.

Bright flashlight beams sliced through the darkness mere inches from my trembling face.

I heard the heavy boots of the armed tactical team swarming the area.

They had been waiting patiently outside the cabin the entire time.

My father yelled at them to find the baby alive at all costs.

I held my breath until my lungs burned like absolute fire.

The men eventually moved further down the steep ravine to search the riverbank.

I crept silently back toward the dirt road where they had parked their tactical vehicles.

Four black armored SUVs sat idling quietly in the moonlight.

Only one armed guard was left leaning against the lead vehicle.

I picked up a massive jagged rock from the muddy ditch.

I snuck up behind him and slammed it fiercely against his temple.

He dropped instantly to the dirt without making a single sound.

I climbed quickly into the driver seat of the armored truck.

I glanced briefly in the rearview mirror and froze completely.

A small boy was strapped securely into a car seat in the back row.

He had my exact eyes.
