Chapter 9 - The Rescue

I grabbed Lily tightly by her small jacket and kicked my legs aggressively toward the faint light above.

We broke the surface of the freezing water, gasping violently for life-saving air amidst the stormy waves.

Mason was desperately treading water nearby, his lips turning a terrifying shade of pale blue.

I swam over to him, wrapping my free arm securely around his waist to keep his head above the chaotic water.

I told them to hold onto my shoulders tightly as I began the grueling swim back toward the distant shoreline.

My body was completely numb, and sheer adrenaline was the only thing keeping my heavy limbs moving.

Every single inch felt like a massive mile, but the thought of losing them fueled my absolute determination.

We finally felt the soft, muddy bottom of the lake beneath our freezing feet.

I dragged both children out of the water, collapsing heavily onto the wet grass in sheer exhaustion.

I quickly pulled off my wet shirt and wrapped it around Lily to generate any possible warmth.

Suddenly, blinding spotlights completely flooded the dark shoreline, illuminating the entire muddy beach.

Dozens of armed police officers and emergency medical technicians rushed quickly down the steep embankment.

David had successfully brought the authorities to the cabin using the GPS data I sent him earlier.

The paramedics immediately wrapped all three of us in thick, warm thermal foil blankets and administered oxygen.

I watched as police officers dragged a conscious, screaming Vanessa up the hill in heavy steel handcuffs.

She cursed at me violently, promising that she would find a way to destroy my life from inside her prison cell.

An officer informed me that Marcus had fully confessed to the entire conspiracy after waking up in police custody.

They had enough undeniable evidence to put both of them away in federal prison for the rest of their natural lives.

Mason looked up at me with tears in his eyes, terrified that he would be sent to a terrible foster home now.

I hugged the brave boy tightly and promised him that he was my son now, and I would never let him go.
