Chapter 2 - The Emergency Call

I stared at the horrific scene, feeling a violent wave of nausea wash over my entire body.
My five-year-old daughter had been treated worse than a stray animal in my own home.
I sprinted back up the stairs with my fists clenched, ready to throw Vanessa out of the house forever.
When I reached the hallway, the dining room was completely empty.
I heard frantic whispering coming from the master bedroom on the second floor.
I rushed up the carpeted stairs and kicked the bedroom door wide open.
Vanessa was standing by the window with her smartphone pressed tightly to her ear.
She was crying hysterically, but there were absolutely no actual tears falling from her eyes.
I heard her tell the 911 dispatcher that her husband had gone completely insane and was attacking the family.
I stepped forward to snatch the phone from her hand, but she anticipated my movement.
She deliberately threw her own phone against the brick fireplace, shattering the screen into a million pieces.
Then she grabbed the heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and smashed it violently into her own forehead.
Blood instantly poured down her face as she collapsed onto the plush bedroom carpet.
I froze in pure shock as I realized the terrifying depth of her malicious calculation.
She looked up at me with a wicked, triumphant smile hidden beneath the blood.
She whispered that the police were already on their way and they would only see a battered wife.
I knew my previous slap had left a distinct red mark on her cheek to support her evil narrative.
I turned around to grab the kids and escape, but I heard heavy sirens wailing down our quiet suburban street.

Red and blue lights aggressively flashed through the bedroom window, illuminating her sinister grin.
I ran down the stairs just as the heavy wooden front door was violently kicked open by two armed police officers.
