Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the Past

The unconscious man bleeding on my hallway floor was Marcus, the older brother of my late first wife.

He had always hated me, blaming me for the tragic car accident that took his sister’s life.

The police had declared him dead after his vehicle plunged off a steep bridge three years ago.

I frantically searched his pockets and found a burner phone filled with encrypted text messages from Vanessa.

The messages revealed a horrific, long-term conspiracy that shattered everything I thought I knew.

Vanessa had not married me for love or even for my modest bank account.

She and Marcus had meticulously planned this marriage to gain access to a massive life insurance policy my first wife had secretly established for Lily.

The policy was worth over ten million dollars, but it only paid out if both Lily and her biological mother were deceased.

Vanessa was supposed to adopt Lily legally and then arrange a tragic, fatal accident.

I realized with absolute horror that they had already taken the kids to execute the final phase of their evil plan.

I called David, instructing him to send the police to my house to collect Marcus and the tablet full of evidence.

I grabbed the keys to Marcus’s rental car, knowing Vanessa would recognize my vehicle if I used it.

I accessed the GPS history on Marcus’s burner phone to track their most recent rendezvous point.

The coordinates led to an abandoned, isolated logging cabin situated deep in the Appalachian Mountains.

I drove recklessly through the stormy night, pushing the engine to its absolute limits.

The winding mountain roads were slick with freezing rain, making every sharp turn incredibly dangerous.

I finally spotted the dark, decaying wooden cabin hidden behind a thick grove of towering pine trees.

I parked the car half a mile away and crept silently through the muddy forest toward the structure.

I peered through the filthy, broken glass of the cabin window and saw Vanessa pacing back and forth.

She was holding a loaded shotgun, but the room was completely empty of any children.

Then I heard the terrifying sound of a boat motor roaring to life on the massive, freezing lake behind the cabin.
