Chapter 3 - The Arrest

The officers rushed into the foyer with their weapons drawn and aimed directly at my chest.
They ordered me to drop to my knees and place my hands securely behind my head.
I tried to explain that my wife was lying and that she was the one abusing my child.
Vanessa stumbled dramatically down the stairs, covered in fresh blood and weeping loudly.
She pointed a shaking finger at me and told the officers I had beaten her because dinner was cold.
The older officer forcefully pushed me to the floor and snapped cold steel handcuffs tightly around my wrists.
I begged them to go look in the basement and see the cage where my daughter was locked away.
The younger officer went to investigate, but he returned a minute later shaking his head.
He announced that the basement was completely empty except for some stacked cardboard boxes.
I realized Vanessa must have cleaned the basement while I was outside taking a phone call yesterday.
The cage and the blood I saw were entirely gone, completely erasing my only physical proof.
Lily and Mason stood at the top of the stairs, clutching each other in absolute terror.
I yelled for Mason to tell the police the truth about what his mother had done.
Vanessa shot her son a terrifying, lethal glare that promised unimaginable consequences if he spoke.
Mason lowered his head and told the police that he had not seen anything happen.
My heart shattered into a million pieces as the officers dragged me aggressively out the front door.
I watched through the barred window of the police cruiser as Vanessa wrapped her arms around my crying daughter.
I was formally booked into the county jail for aggravated domestic assault and denied immediate bail.
I sat in the freezing holding cell for twelve agonizing hours, desperately praying for a miracle.

Suddenly, a sympathetic guard walked over to the bars and handed me a crumpled, bloody piece of notebook paper.
He said a young boy had slipped it into his pocket at the station, and the note revealed exactly where Vanessa was hiding the real evidence.
