Chapter 5 - The Accomplice

The deep, raspy voice echoing through the vent sent a terrifying chill straight down my spine.
I pounded my fists aggressively against the solid wooden door, demanding to be let out immediately.
The man on the other side of the door simply laughed a cold, emotionless laugh.
He told me that Vanessa had hired him to ensure I never made it out of the house alive.
I frantically looked around the small laundry room for any potential weapon or escape route.
I realized the gas line running behind the dryer had been intentionally disconnected, and a thick smell of sulfur was filling the room.
He was planning to blow up the house and frame my death as a desperate, guilt-ridden suicide.
I grabbed a heavy metal wrench from the utility shelf and smashed it violently against the door hinges.
The wood splintered slightly, but the heavy metal deadbolt held the door firmly in place.
I started coughing uncontrollably as the toxic natural gas displaced the oxygen in the small space.
My vision began to blur, and my knees felt incredibly weak under the crushing pressure of the situation.
I knew I could not die in this room because Lily and Mason were depending on me.
I wrapped my thick winter coat tightly around my fist and punched straight through the drywall beside the door frame.
I reached my bleeding hand through the jagged hole and blindly felt for the exterior lock.
My fingers finally grasped the metal latch, and I violently twisted it until the deadbolt snapped open.
I burst out of the laundry room, gasping desperately for clean air in the dark hallway.
The tall man in the black jacket turned around in shock, pulling a heavy silver pistol from his waistband.
I tackled him aggressively to the hardwood floor before he could aim the weapon at my chest.
We wrestled violently in the dark, smashing into a glass display cabinet that shattered everywhere.
I managed to wrest the gun from his grip and struck him hard across the temple with the heavy metal barrel.

The man collapsed into unconsciousness, and I finally got a clear look at his face under the moonlight.
My heart stopped completely because the man lying on my floor was supposedly killed in a car accident three years ago.
